Issue Number 3                                                                        November 2007
As always, this issue of Avenue Z Writing Solutions' FourWayStop has four sections: Technology, Writing, Marketing and a little something extra, a "lagniappe" my relatives in Louisiana would say.
  • Technology: I've been teaching Microsoft Office courses for years, and I'm always happy to share the little tips that make my life easier in those applications.
  • Marketing: I was particulary intrigued by a fellow copywriter's discussion of what makes a successful email campaign. You'll be surprised by his discussion of what gets marked as spam.
  • Writing: How do you come up with a name for a new anything these days? Here are my tips for brainstorming.
  • Lagniappe: These create-your-own-art websites make me laugh.

MS Word Tips and Tricks
Ideas for Word 2003 and MS Word 2007

Do you get annoyed when MS Word assumes you always want to capitalize the first word of a sentence? Have you ever tried to put a picture HERE and it keeps jumping to THERE? Have you inherited a company template where the indented lines just will not line up?

I've taught MS Office classes from time to time, and over the years I have wrestled with the best and worst that Bill Gates has offered. Here are 10 of my favorite tips for making Word behave -- both the 2003 and 2007 versions.

Successful Campaigns Start with Good Reputations
Email

"The deliverability of your emails is largely dependent on your reputation as an emailer. And your open rates and revenues will depend largely on your reputation with your subscribers," says fellow copywriter Nick Usborne in his October Newsletter article, "Successful Email Campaigns Are Built on One Thing Only -- Reputation."

Usborne says you can't do anything about the reputation you have earned so far, but you can start making changes today by delivering content that is of interest and value to your readers.

A copywriter's tips for
brainstorming great titles

Brainstorming
Sometimes you just can't come up with a clever title for your new eNewsletter or the upcoming one-day workshop or your boss' latest in-house initiative.

I've been helping several Avenue Z clients name or rename new projects. I generally brainstorm a long list of ideas, then I ask my contact to figure out what types of characteristics of the names stand out. We usually end up narrowing it down to a couple of possibilities before the contact heads off to her colleagues to get the consensus.
