Issue Number 5                                                                          January 2008
Going GreenHappy New Year from Avenue Z Writing Solutions. I was perusing the year-end top 10 lists over the holiday, and I ran across BusinessWeek's Ten Likely Events in 2008. What I found interesting about this list was the item about "Green Companies."

"Green Crisis: There will be a backlash in the green movement after it becomes clear that many of the companies claiming to be green are in fact nothing of the sort. Businesses that proclaim they are "carbon neutral" will find that such proclamations no longer carry much weight among far more skeptical media and consumers."

Many of my clients are finding ways to go green or to advertise that they are green. This issue focuses on ways you can prove you're green to your clients, members and audience.

Ever wonder how a freelancer estimates a project for your organization?

Telling Your Green Story
More consumers are looking for proof of an environmentally conscious agenda by the companies they choose. Here are a few tips for making sure you're communicating the message.
  1. Write a green philosophy statement.
Put down in writing the things your organization does to reuse, reduce and recycle. Post the information on your website, and be ready to share it with people who ask.
  2. Share green tips with your audience.
Everyone wants to be greener these days. Share small tips on what you do to think green in your regular communication such as emails (try your signature line!), eNewsletters, promotions, etc.
  3. Just the stats, please.
Spend some time calculating how much paper, energy and resource your organization's green efforts have saved. This info can make a nice press release.
  4. Participate in green events.
Organize your staff for a Saturday trash pick-up in your area, or voluteer for a storm drain cleaning project. Then let your clients know about your events and give them resources to participate as well.

How Avenue Z Thinks Green
association solutions Companies I've worked for have considered being green an afterthought. When I became a freelance writer, I resolved to make being green a priority. Here is a short list of my green initiatives.
  1. My business cards, paper, envelopes, notepads and most of my postcards are made of recycled paper.
  2. I use both sides of most sheets of paper.
  3. I recycle.
  4. I use incandescent bulbs.
  5. I turn off my computer and monitor every evening.
  6. My home office means there's no commute.
  7. I recycle my ink cartridges.

A Green Sense of Humor
Green humor Not even the environmental movement is safe from humor and sarcasm. Giggle subtly at your desk at these tidbits of green humor.

"That's the thing about Mother Nature, she really doesn't care what economic bracket you're in."
- Whoopi Goldberg

"I know they are all environmentalists. I heard a lot of my speeches recycled."
- Jesse Jackson

"Not all chemicals are bad. Without chemicals such as hydrogen and oxygen, for example, there would be no way to make water, a vital ingredient in beer."
- Dave Barry

"Working in a home office really saves water. When I'm in an office by myself, I sometimes work in my pajamas, and I use the same dishes over and over."
- Beth Ziesenis, your green copywriter

The Differences Between a Good Recycler
and a Not-So-Good Recycler:
GOOD RECYCLER: You fill up the recycle bin every week with cans, bottles, and jars.  NOT SO GOOD: You give the recycle bin to the kids to use as a toboggan.

GOOD RECYCLER: You take your used motor oil to the nearest recycling station or collection facility. NOT SO GOOD: You avoid the used-oil problem by never changing your oil. You recycle engines instead.

GOOD RECYCLER: You recycle not only your newspapers but also your phone books, magazines, and cardboard boxes.  NOT SO GOOD: You leave your newspapers in the bathroom stall at work after you're done. Doesn't that count?

Most jokes respectfully borrowed from the slightly irreverent environmental jokes at Grinning Planet. Enter at your own risk...
